Aqeel is the name of the vocalist, composer and songwriter from Los Angeles, California. Lover of music since the days of singing in church as a youth with his mother before dedicating his time professionally as a musician AQEEL spent ten years as a barber.
In 1998 he worked with Erykah Badu on a demo, she produced and he wrote the lyrics, but the project didn’t see light because AQEEL wasn’t as prepared as he thought he was. This made him more determined in taking his craft seriously. Shortly after he had another opportunity, he worked three days along side Dr. Dre on ‘The Chronic 2001’ project offering backing vocals and lyrics.
In 1999 he was offered a Motown gig in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. He stayed 4 and half years honing his skills, deciding to establish himself there. From that moment he went on to collaborate with a host of acts in Europe. The most important was Samy Deluxe and KC Da Rockee’s Fire Tour, one of the biggest tours in German history.
Well adapted in his new life style AQEEL decided to stay in Spain. In 2002 he moved to Madrid also collaborating with a host of acts there Mala Rodríguez, Jota Mayúscula, Ketama, La Excepción, Wagon Cookin’ and Guateque All Stars to name a few.
In 2005 he released his debut: BEATS AND VOICES, rated one of the best soul voices in Spain and highly praised in the Spanish media. During the recording of the record, AQEEL met GRIFFI, highly rated producer in Spain..s hip hop scene, who also did two of the hottest tunes on the album, after which he decided to move to Barcelona to work hand in hand with him. From there a great chemistry began. He collaborated with all the artists on the DEL PALO records roster: QUIROGA, SÓLO LOS SOLO and CHACHO BRODAS.
In present day AQEEL offers: INSIDE THE MIND OF AN AFRO AMERICAN ANGEL, a mixtape (i.e. FREAKTAPE) where you’ll find classic joints, recent hits, songs from his sessions with GRIFFI plus two dope brand new tracks from the smash production group SA-RA Creative Partners, childhood friends of AQEEL. On this Freaktape you..ll find a soup of sexual funk, spaced out jazz and a whole lotta soul!!! A variety of sounds and new expressions transformed from passion, dedication and hard living.
AQEEL has a deep funk project under his real name GLEN ANTHONY HENRY, his first LP ‘Relax & Love’ is now out on Unique Records.
