Hard to find and hard to please. We know that the easy route is always the least rewarding and that the best stuff is always hidden at the bottom of a pile, or under the counter, or in the basement of Chinese nail salon in the Bronx. That’s why we’re not interested by the tick-box mentality of radio playlists and the broad-brush approach of media empires. We instead present a utopian, transnational vision of culture that always stays one step ahead of fickle fashions. We’ll be covering anything from maracatù from the Pernambuco area of Brazil, the duttiest UK dubstep and low club, Haitian fight songs, Barabadian dancehall or French street-dance expressions.

Always the first to promote the hot sounds of the global-city to an international community of beat heads and music junkies – in issue 001 we broke the sound of Congolese coupé decalé, in issue 002 we announced the arrival of the international ‘beat generation’ and were the first to interview José Padhila, the Brazilian director of Bus 174 and now Elite Squad. And we’re just as likely to hit people upside their head with the new sound of Chinese rock as to hype the latest street sounds to from these shores.

But it’s not just music – we’re also in touch with many of the major street artists and graphic designers who have submitted exclusive artwork for publication – already Invader, HVW8 and LCP United have connected; and our extra stush typography and layout and our specially commissioned cover art has had grafik artists salivating like it was a first edition of Art Review.

And what speaks to us more than a hot artist is a great story – that’s why we’ll be speaking with human rights activist and Olympic winner Tommie Smith and Dominican author Junot Diaz, or looking back at the seminal warehouse parties of 1988 and the way they’ve shaped the music we know and love today. Never happy telling things the way things appear to be, we’re more concerned with the shape of things to come. SHOOK is the uncertaincy principle in full effect. www.shook.fm

2008 is a huge year for singer/songwriter Peter Hadar, that was kicked off by his surprise recognition as one of URB Magazine’s Next 100 Artists; calling him ,“the next, next big thing in R&B”. He was then featured in Billboard Magazine’s ‘Now Hear This’ section, both praising his style and determination for greatness. On June 3rd, Peter released his sophomore album ‘Well Dressed for the Art Show’ which further separates him from the pack; delving deeper into his Electronica, Glam, and Experimental flavor. His background in fashion extends his versatility, style, and influence. Nothing can stop this Cool Weirdo’s International TakeOver. Peter Hadar’s album “Well dressed for the art show” is available here.

The Hawthorne Headhunters is a project made up of the individuals; Stoney Rock, Ced No and Proh Mic. The project was conceived in Ced’s Studio in that special place between Long Beach and Los Angeles - Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives Ced and Veto, and Seattle transplant, Proh Mic locked it down under the shine of Hollywood Park and created some sounds in the great traditions of musical heavyweight projects such as Funkadelic, Headhunters, Soulquarians, Native Tongues Posse and Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills’ Super Session. Crossing the lines between the Southern influenced tastes of the producer/singer/rapper Stoney Rock, keyboard and studio controller Ced No, fused with the next level northern bounce of rapper/producer Proh Mic, the HH’s is at the crossroads of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop from players already years deep into the game. Look for the album to drop later this year on the new HVW8 records imprint.

Shawn Jackson’s latest project, “First of All…” is a highly anticipated album that aims to satisfy true fans that feel a void within quality hip hop music. The album is a wonderful balance of sounds which features artists such as Guilty Simpson (Stones Throw Records), Ty of Ty & Kory, Double K (People Under the Stairs), Ta’Raach (C.R.A.C.), Beloved, and Comel of the group Time Machine. It’s balance and well rounded features give listeners something that is often missing from hip hop, and further proves that Shawn Jackson is one of the strongest MCs in the game to date. Leon Ware born 16th February 1940, Black Bottom, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.

During his youth he had an accident with a slingshot and caught himself in the eye leaving him totally blind for two years. Consequently, Leon was sent to the Fitzgerald School For The Blind, which, incidentally, is the same school that Stevie Wonder was sent to. Leon was one of several Motown Records producers who gained their first experience of the industry in the mid-50’s doo-wop group the Romeos, whose line-up included the legendary, Lamont Dozier.

He wrote the majority of Ike And Tina Turner’s ‘Nuff Said’ in 1970, before rejoining Motown and co-writing Michael Jackson’s 1972 hit ‘I Wanna Be Where You Are’ with T-Boy Ross, brother of Diana Ross.

Ware re-emerged as a vocalist in 1973, when he was featured on Quincy Jones’s ‘Body Heat’. With T-Boy Ross, he then began work on a romantic song-cycle, intending it to be his own solo debut.Instead, Motown boss Berry Gordy persuaded Ware to give the songs to Marvin Gaye, in return for being allowed to produce the superstar.

The result was the delicate and tender ‘I Want You’, one of Gaye’s finest artistic achievements.

This exposure enabled Ware to launch his own career with the acclaimed ‘Musical Massage’.

Leaving Motown in 1978, he enjoyed minor US hits in 1979 and 1981 with ‘What’s Your Name?’ and ‘Baby Don’t Stop Me’, in the same heavily produced, lush style that he had fashioned for Gaye.

He has worked, written or produced material for artists as diverse as: Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Norman Connors, The Main Ingredient, Average White Band, Donny Hathaway, Bobby Womack, Rufus, Minnie Riperton…in short, you name a soul band and Leon Ware has had some involvement at one stage! Kicksnare.be just wake you up, so you can get the Nhmiah Su Mixtape + the other treats on Muhsinah’s page like the Erykah Badu Boozina Remix.

About Muhsinah - Pronounced [mu•s?•n?] - Singer, producer, vigilante, lover, dreamer.

Having landed on the musical radar like some kind of a phantom battleship, this Washington D.C. native continues to fires away at us, sinking nay-sayers and making a name for herself at a rate which some might consider alarming. Appearing on a slew of independent releases this year, Muhsinah has earned each and every title that’s been thrown her way- engineer/producer/composer/singer/songwriter/arranger/inspiration and the like. Contrary to popular misconception, Muhsinah was not dropped off on this planet by some enigmatic cosmic force; she hitched a ride on her own star. Listen

Much like her debut album, Moments of Clarity, Wayna’s newest release, Higher Ground, displays a level of artistry that’s rarely found among the plethora of singers presently occupying the musical landscape.

Over Ground’s 13 songs, the Ethiopian-born, D.C. area-raised Wayna manages to accomplish the often unmanageable task of coupling meaningful, decipherable lyrics with well produced and compelling tracks. Although not representative of the album’s overall subject matter, “Billie Club” captures this sentiment perfectly. With vocal and production assistance from Three Stars alumna Muhsinah.

One of the great things about Wayna is that while she can have a track like “Billie Club” on her album, with all of its potential explosiveness, she can also have “Mr. Duracell”, which is less about batteries and more about a device in which said brand could be used to power. She recognizes that as humans, we go through a range of emotions and, as a result, can’t stay in one feelings box for all times. Artists who understand this and have the tact to convey it in a way where their audience can relate it to their everyday lives will always have supporters. Wayna has done this, and with the help of a talented group of  (local)producers(Kev Brown on “Not Gonna Go), has put out a noteworthy sophomore effort that deserves to be heard by all who consider themselves musically literate and love music by artists who strive to make a connection to their listeners that is more than superficial.full@WJacarlMelton
