I’m recording right now, as we speak. You can expect a new Eric Roberson album by early next year. I’m just focused on getting every bit of ink out of my pen right now!
In the liner notes for your compilation “The Collection”, I discovered that “Change For Me” is an Eric Roberson fan favorite. What do you consider to be your best work yet, including the work you’ve done for others?
That’s hard to say. I give my all in all my work. I know what I feel about my art, but I just give what I have and allow the fans to set its worth. I’m very proud of my last album “…Left”, because it was the first time I had to balance so much in between the creative process. I’ve always been used to zoning out in the studio for days and weeks to record, but now my touring schedule makes that difficult. So I had to approach recording with another level of focus and I feel we’ve accomplished it with that record.
What is you main focus right now, being a writer or being an artist?
They are both the same for me. It’s hard for me to separate the two, but it all starts with the writing. The writing is the ammo and the artistry is the gun. But I’m writing for other artist right now, as well… so I guess I answered the question! (laughs) My main focus right now is being a writer, but I can’t help being in artist mode all the time! (laughs)
The people who’ve seen you perform live on stage will agree: THAT’S quality music! So when can we see a new live album coming from Eric Roberson?
Well, I’ve released a live DVD and album 2 years ago, so it may be time for another one.
The DVD is called “Erro Live Vol. DC”, and came out wonderful, but with all the new songs we have, it may be time for another one.
The last time you were in The Netherlands, you gave us one fine show (October 2007, with Anthony David). When can we see you performing live again in The Netherlands?
We don’t have a show planned at the moment, but we are planning a huge show in London at the Indigo2 on Oct 4th with Anthony David and Angela Johnson. I know that’s a nice little trip for my Dutch fans, but trust it will be well worth it. Plus it will be my birthday, so I’m trying to celebrate with everyone who comes.
Recently, you did a wonderful Stevie Wonder tribute in London at the Jazz Cafe. Any chance we will see an EP or full album of that good stuff?
The Stevie Wonder tribute is one of the things I look forward to doing most every year. He’s one of my favorite artists, so to share with the crowd how much I care about Stevie’s music is an honor for me. As for an album of Stevie covers, that makes me nervous just thinking about it (laughs). I may be too much of a fan. The album would never come out because I would always be going back into the studio to fix this part and that part. I would just want to make sure i did his work justice. If I can remove the fan in me, maybe we can make that album.
What’s your favorite song/album of this moment?
My favorite album at this moment is an independent album by an artist named Coultrain. The album is called “The Adventures Of Seymour Liberty”. It sat in my car for months and then one day I played it and I’ve been rocking it ever since. My favorite song at the moment is “Weird Fishes” by RadioHead, off their new album, “In Rainbows”.
Any last words for your Dutch fans?
Definitely.. To all my Dutch fans, thank you for finding me, receiving my art, and giving me back the same love that I put into it. I appreciate you and look forward to building with you more in the very near future.
Eric Roberson made a poem that sums up what many of us think about the music industry as we know it. And this poem is so so good. If you love good music you will understand this, and maybe you can also be a part of the Moovmnt. Cause this is what we are about. We need to bring the music fan’s that honest music. We try to give the real music lovers a platform to talk and hear about this timeless music. So please read this poem, and I hope you will understand…
IF I CONTROLLED IT
if i controled
this as a whole
i would dead all the titles and
mix in soul
with rock and roll
and house and all
knock down the walls
the hip hop laws
turn off auto tune
and show all flaws
open doors
to indie cats
with heart felt raps
and soulful tracks
reward the ones
who give us tons
rather than just one song
for our funds
if i controled it
i would demand
each a&r
be a music fan
be about respect
before ur check
if u spoon feed teens
feed them intellect
offer a message
offer a lesson
an escape, a blessing
offer a weapon
that would fire a bulletin the form of words
that would kill the non sense
that we just heard
i would bring back the legends
develope the young
show them the beautiful way
our stories were sung
i would judge only
your heart and your tongue
cuz looks cant help
the soul of a song
if i controlled this
no art would be lost
over budgets and business
or projected chart
sit would be how i felt
when i pressed play
and opened my ears
to what u had to say
forget about looks
all i would ask
is when u open ur mouth
give what u have
i believe in balance
i believe in music
i believe if you have it
you have to use it
so if i controlled it
first id let it go
sit back and watch
and see where it goes
open my heart
and enjoy what it shows
cuz only God can control
the direction of soul…
