Known as Los Angeles’ “Ambassador of Boogie Funk“, dâm-funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Culver City section of L.A., dâm (pronounced: ‘Dame’ as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-’80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.
For dâm, “Funk is not a fad - it’s a way of life”. When you listen to beats like the one above, which is the first time many people heard dâm-funk on wax, its clear that he might well have been responsible for some of those OG g-funk lines on some of our favourite records too.
As a DJ/selector, dâm attracts the most discerning Boogie Funk afficionados to his Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it’s not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups’ unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy.
Earlier this year Dâm-Funk’s Debut 12″ dropped on Stones Throw Recordings with Stunning Artwork and 2 amazing tunes - “Sidewayz” and “Burgundy City“, the latter being one of the most heavily rinsed records on the Deviation Radio Show in 2008.
The new Boogie sound of LA has come to life thanks to Dam-Funk’s vintage synths and futuristic vision. He plays all the instruments and uses no sequencers no computers. The LP “Toeachisown” will be dropping 2009 on Stones Throw Records.

If you missed his legendary Boogie Funk mix via the Stones Throw podcast, the bad news is, it is no longer available. The good news is, you can download it here. Via Benji B’s DeviationMusic
Listen to samples from Dilla’s Pay Jay, the unreleased album that Dilla recorded for MCA Records. If you got a copy of Pay Jay, you probably have a bootleg version. So if you support good music, buy some albums from the Dilla catalogue.
Madlib - Beat Konducta Vol. 5: Dil Cosby Suite, Digital album is available for download at Stones Throw.
Featuring J.Rocc. Madlib’s 5th installment of Beat Konducta is his & J.Rocc’s tribute to J Dilla.
Stones Throw Podcast #37 Mixed by GLK. The Heliocentrics are on Now-Again Records and have a new single coming in Fall. The Gaslamp Killer is from San Diego, works in Los Angeles and a record coming out on Money Studies at the end of ‘08.
The Oxtopus was specifically recorded for the Oxtopus compilation. This was one of the last times Dilla ever graced the mic. Also, if you notice, the beat is basically a snap back at the song Grindin’ by The Clipse. There’s a video on youtube of J-Rocc playing it live in Sweden, but no one seems to know where this track came from. Now ya know, Lyrics like, “I’m ill wit da pill you tired then take 2/wit dill in ya system dog ya cant lose/ya now rockin’ with the O.X/I’m back like black kojack up in you like kotex/I know you tired of the same ole same ole/the way my chains hang dog, those things get tangled”. The final version has Dilla doing a chorus, that went something like “So what’s the name of the jam? / The Oxtopus (yep) / wassup wit wavin’ dem hands / we got cha hooked (yep) / wassup wit blazin dem yams / we got the kush ” O.X.
