Few of you have ever heard of Tony Cook, yet some people call Tony’s “On The Floor” (released in ’84) the first house music record. Eventhough the sound of his music seemed to breathe New York, Tony was in fact from Georgia. After two and a half decades he finally releases his “Back To Reality” album on Stones Throw. If you’re into that Modern Funk, you’ll definitely love this album full of unreleased material and rare jams. Now available via Rush Hour or the ST store.
He got his start as James Brown’s drummer (while still a teenager) as soon as he graduated from school. He drummed off and on for James as well as Etta James, all the while recording his own music that sounded nothing like neither artist. Even though he’s released many 7” singles through his own label, none of these songs have ever been on a full album before, They’ve never been performed live either.
