Just got this nice e-mail from the guys over at Melting Pot Music (sorry we can’t make it this Saturday to the Beat BBQ Oliver) with some good news. DJ Day and Miles Bonny teamed up and conjured up the lovely Raphael Saadiq tribute 12″ – “Instant Saadiq” – containing three songs from Raphael’s “Instant Vintage” classic. They got the Day X Miles treatment and Swiss artist Anna-Lina provided some very beautiful artwork..

MeLo-X Returns with another Instrumental EP inspired by a new modern day classic, Maxwell’s BLACKsummers’night. Many producers pull from the past for there sampled records but in this project MeLo-X pulls from newly released album’s too create his own interpretations of these artist’s work. His past Remix EP’s for Raphael Saadiq and Amy Winehouse Gained alot of Respect in the producer world as well as the Blogosphere and has even caught the attention of Mark Ronson. With this EP, he ventures in to Spacey time Travel as he chops up Maxwell’s new Album too create this head nodding rhythm driven project. This is a new type of project for producers to begin creating. Actually taking a brand new album and Sampling it to create new classic Electronic, HipHop and Soul Music. This is the first single called “The Highest” which is Sampled from Maxwell’s Bad Habits. Okayplayer..Picture by Tone.

Today’s Slept On Sundays is dedicated to Ishfaq. Originally from the UK he currently resides in Croatia and has lived in Ireland as well as Amsterdam before that. I got put onto his music while he was living out here between 2001 and 2003 and he quickly became one of my favorites. He has released his own “The Change EP” on Dublin based Scribble Records in 2007 as well as done remixes/production for Beatspoke, O.Boogie and Stee Downes. Throughout the years Ishfaq has also made a name for himself by posting unofficial remixes online that totally blow the originals out of the water. So to keep you in a nice lazy Sunday vibe here’s one of my favorites out of those, his version of D’Angelo’s “Left & Right”

The charisma that Detroit’s heavy hitting MC Guilty Simpson and Los Angeles based Beat Konducta Madlib share is undeniable. A string of songs going back to Guilty’s first appearance on wax (Jaylib’s “Strapped”) testify to a musical kinship that is rare in today’s rapper-as-an-accessory marketplace. To us, Guilty over a Madlib beat is like hearing Guru over Premier circa Daily Operation, or CL over Pete around the time they recorded “Straighten It Out.” Some times, a rapper and a producer just work well together.

The two together making “OJ Simpson”, Madlib (Otis Jackson) and Guilty Simpson. OJ Simpson is the name of the album. No, you won’t hear Guilty make any references to bloody gloves. No, you won’t catch Madlib driving a bronco. These are some 14 hard hitting, straight from the gutter hip hop tracks featuring Guilty’s inimitable baritone and a couple guest appearances (Elzhi, Strong Arm Steady). Some cuts by J.Rocc. And a whole bunch of attitude. This is one of our favorite projects in a while.

The title track and the needs-nothing-more-than-the-title verbal onslaught that is “Coroners Music” will remind you of the hip hop you’ve missed. The even sicker title track “OJ Simpson” might just be the hardest joint I’ve heard in a minute! To find out more about this killer combo and buy their music go to the Stones Throw Store.

Flirtwitu

When is it gonna drop? Crate…where is that joint? Well I got news for you…it’s finally here. Full Crate & Mar kept us in the dark with this one, but “Flirtwitu” is a fact. They hooked up Versis to lace the track and I must say this is the most mature track they’ve made up yet. I love the way Mar brings back the “She Was Fly” and “Aftersexin'” lyrics and those soothing harmonies and caressing bass kicks are the bizness.

Now everybody knows I’m an out-and-out critic, but when the guys played this on a lazy sunday afternoon a while back I was sold. One of Crate’s best productions thus far and Mar is steadily growing up to be a terrific soul singer. When I heard Versis was going to be on this as well, I thought it might be an overkill, but boy was I wrong. He actually finishes the track with finesse and this young cat will most surely be dropping some killer verses in the next few years to come. Artwork was done by Brian Elstak and Moovmnt is hosting it…HERE.

19

Today, July 23, is none other than Kissey Asplund‘s birthday and to celebrate it in style she decided to give away some tunes. The project entitled “19” consists of re-recorded versions of two songs, “Jazzcool” and “MyWay”, that she originally wrote when she was 19. Kissey also shows some piano skills on these tracks, backing herself up on the keys. Enjoy!
