Young Flume is a local Sydney producer that has been blowing out of proportions lately. His music has found my ears before, but thanks to his new track “That Look” featuring George Maple I concluded it was time for me to write a little something on here.
Flume got his first taste for producing at the early age of 13 thanks to a music production program that came with a box of cereal. It began Flume’s obsession with all things synthetic and started his addiction for plug-ins, sample packs & vintage analogue hardware.
He has done remixes and productions for Chet Faker, Ta-Ku and Seekae. Flume even asked rapper Freddie Gibbs to feature on the Flume Deluxe Edition.
Not that long ago I talked to PYRMDPLAZA from Wales. On that particular occasion he told me Soulection had asked him to do a White Label release. What I did not know is that it would drop so damn fast as White Label 011.
PYRMDPLAZA is currently attending the University of Wales and is studying ‘Creative Sound and Music’. He started making music about 6-7 years ago with FLStudio, but now uses Ableton. Some of you might remember some of his previous releases on the French imprint Laruche Records.
As always this white label release is available for free download, so go ahead and grab this one!
Another northman who goes by the name of Jasper Staal teams up with fellow Groninger Duke Hugh on the track “Buttarolls“.
While most of Jasper’s productions are Trap-oriented. With Buttarolls, we see a more soulful side with Don Blackman inspired slap bass. The homie Hugo is one of Holland’s best kept secrets. Fatherhood made him grow a belly, but when this guy teams up with Jasper Staal that’s the hook! I heard that Jasper and HughGo are working on a project together, so lets hope there’s more butter in the barrel waiting to be churned.
Shout out to the Darker Than Wax fam for making this one available for free download. Worldwide, we moov!
At times I hear music that’s a bit older, but so good I just have to mention it. Earlier this year singer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Garzón-Montano, from Brooklyn NY, released his debut EP on Sus Records.
Gabriel was born to a Colombian father and a French mother and spent his early years mastering the violin, guitar, and drums. He later turned to the piano and bass guitar to better complete his compositions. By the time he graduated from Purchase College’s Conservatory of Music, the foundations for his debut EP, “Bishouné: Alma del Huila“, were already laid. The EP collects six songs of the highest quality, all recorded directly to 2” tape through a Helios console in real time.
Gabriel Garzón-Montano’s music is something you don’t hear very often. Personal, heartfelt, skillful and genre transcending. It’s hard to believe one man can write songs like “Everything Is Everything” and at the same time play every single instrument himself. Of course there are still plenty of musicians who have mastered the art of almost everything. They just don’t turn up very often. In a way Gabriel’s music reminds me of Diggs Duke and it comes as no surprise that he’ll be supporting Lenny Kravitz on 20 of his European tour dates.
The first pressing of his vinyl EP sold out quickly, but thankfully a repress is in stock. Just visit the Sus Records website and treat yourself to something wonderful.

Mndsgn aka Ringgo has, over the years, risen through the ranks. After gaining super star status in the underground world of Beats and Hip Hop he was signed to Stones Throw.
He grew up without luxuries such as electricity, but when he was introduced to the world of music the proverbial sh*t hit the fan. Under the moniker Mndsgn, he headed west and now resides in Los Angeles. For a long time Mndsgn used to be one of our favorite producers, but it seemed like he had disappeared at one point in time. Then out of the blue Stones Throw announced the release of his debut album “Yawn Zen“.
For some reason I had overlooked this release, but luckily came across it again this afternoon. No full album review or nothing. Just a confirmation of what you thought might be the case. Yes…this one is a winner. For when Mndsgn’s gives us his personal take on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Find A Way” in the form of the track “Camelblues”. It’s on and poppin’. Visit the Stones Throw shop to order your vinyl, CD’s or MP3’s.
You’ve all heard Dorian Concept‘s “Draft Culture” (or at least most of you have) and let me tell you we have been waiting for “Joined Ends” to release for a while.
Thank god it’s almost out and the release date, 20 October, is near. Ninja Tune has been releasing some awesome albums lately and this Thursday they are going to tear down OT301 during Amsterdam Dance Event 2014 with Martyn, Actress and Seven Davis Jr. Luck has it we are giving away 2 tickets right here, today!
We have a sneak preview of one of our favorite tracks, “Trophies“, of Dorian Concept’s album that we wanted to share with you. Let’s keep this on the low.
They say that every 20 years or so things make it back into fashion. Nineties R&B has been more than hot this year and one of the new ladies on the block is Rochelle Jordan.
Poor Rojo has apparently been through her fair share of heartbreak and now the talented singer/songwriter doesn’t know how to trust anymore. She decided to be a “Playa 4 Life” at least that’s what her her first single featuring IAMSU off the upcoming album “1021” suggests. Not only does this number symbolize her birthday, it also tells the story Rojo has been through. The track was produced by Jay Ant with additional programming by KLSH.
Looking forward to hearing more R&B ladies like Rochelle Jordan and Rachel Foxx since I have fond memories of the nineties and the smooth love-making music it birthed.
Hello world, meet young Luke Tennyson and Tess Pretty, who together form the electronic duo Tennyson from Edmonton Canada.
They started making music a few years ago and we kept an eye on them for the past few months. Their newest single “With You” seemed like a damn good reason to introduce Tennyson. The tagline for this song reads ‘maybe it’s better to forget where you’re going and end up lost in a place you never expected you’d want to be lost in’. And on that note we leave you to discover these magical melodies for yourself. Playful and bubbly are two words that pop into our head. That mixed with a video game kind of mood is a win.
Pre-order their 7-inch right here if you would like to own this song plus the flip side “Lay-By“.
Jessie Ware might not be an artist you would expect to see on our little music site. When Robin Hannibal is involved musically, you know we’re all over it.
In 2013 Jessie Ware recorded this demo at the Red Bull Studios in London called “12” that did not make it onto “Tough Love”. Robin Hannibal co-wrote the song and produced it together with Salva. What Paul Salva from Frite Nite Records? On guitars we hear Joel Van Dijk and Jessie’s gentle vocals are the icing on the cake.
Indulge yourself and revel in some midnight delight. Oh and what a gift to be able to download this beauty in wave quality for free.
Koen the northman has returned after a short hiatus. I had the pleasure of finally meeting Koen at the Soulection party a few months back and am pleased to see his return with the latest installment of his Outputs series.
For this one Koen had a little help from Baltimore producer Tek.lun and our very own homegrown Jael. As usual his buddy and fellow Groninger Roelie Vuitton was responsible for the artwork. Now the name of my favorite track is “1146” and that’s right about when I usually go to bed. Anyway “Outputs 6” is available on Koen’s Bandcamp page, so drop some if you got some.
